Winter Finches in Bruce County

Some winters when food is scarce, finches from the North erupt in large numbers, and this is one of those years. There have been many finches passing through my place such as the following: Evening Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls, Pine Siskins, and even a few White-winged Crossbills. Other migrating birds are also beginning to show up. Here are a few of my recent highlights: Northern Saw-whet Owl, Rough-legged Hawk, Bohemian Waxwing, Northern Shrike, Snow Buntings, and a Fox Sparrow.

Here are a "few" photos...

Common Redpoll
One of my favourite species of finch. This one let me get some nice shots.

Pine Siskins

White-winged Crossbill (Male)
Usually they like to fly over without landing, but this one decided to stop in for a few minutes, which was pretty awesome!

Purple Finch (Male)
Bohemian Waxwing
First one seen in Bruce County this fall. Was quite a surprise to find it in my yard!
